Phthalic anhydride is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of plasticizers, unsaturated polyester resins, and alkyd resins. It is also used as an intermediate in the production of pigments and dyes, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceutical products. It is also used as a scorch inhibitor for rubber stocks and as a light- and heat-stabilizer of polyolefins. Phthalic anhydride-containing materials are used in coating applications for home appliances, automobiles, medical devices, and furniture.
