The automotive industry uses thousands of tons of steel each year that is heat treated. Many of the products made are bearings, gears, suspension, drivetrain, and other related automotive parts. There are many manufacturing processes including heat treatment that can lead to distortion and lack of dimensional control; therefore the total manufacturing process of a part must be taken into consideration. The main factors contributing to distortion of bearing parts during heat treatment will be reviewed. Some examples of out of round parts prior to grinding will be discussed.
