An investigation into the occurrence of trihalomethane compounds and other synthetic organic chemicals in public water supplies was conducted in 1978 by the New York State Department of Health. Four systems were chosen to be investigated for seasonal variation. The findings indicated that the concentrations of chloroform were often highest at the treatment plant. Interpretation of the data according to source type, available treatment, and physical parameters is presented. Site selection, sample collection, analysis, groundwater sources, surface water sources, and the potential impact of the EPA primary drinking water regulations are discussed. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
