This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the City of Tampa and issues the city is facing with the aging and failure of waterdistribution infrastructure. Due to the long lifecycle of pipes, the City doesnot have reliable data about installation dates andwork orders history; and,the City did not keep an equilibrium among pipeinfrastructure close to the end of the lifecycle, pipelinesin the middle of their lifecycle, and new pipes. Reactive maintenance results in a large percentage ofpipes in the end of their lifecycle.Aging hydraulic infrastructure in the City of Tampa resultsinundersized mains with poor hydraulic performance, deteriorated pipes (corrosion and tuberculation)that are prone to fail, andlack the right location of fittings. Valves and accessories are buriedand ofunknown status, and there is alack of historic records about maintenance. Lack of efficiency and reduced reliability in distribution systems was the driver behind an effort by the City of Tampa to identify vulnerable portions of the service area wherewater distribution system problems are most likely tooccur, and elucidate preventive measurements tomaintain service levels. A Geographic Information System (GIS) was selected as the solution because it allows the water department managers to gather allthe mentioned needs and provide a spatial-framedsolution to satisfy the requirements. The benefits of spatial unit of analysis are provided, along with the methodology. Presentation conclusions indicate the following:GIS enables planning staff to evaluate and understandthe spatial distribution of negative events within thedistribution area and prioritize capital investmentprojects;water distribution infrastructure aging issueshappen in areas because of the typical developmentpattern of the cities; and, statistics of the negative events within the Section(unit of spatial analysis) and data mining are goodtools to focus the investment of scarce funds.
