Realization of the cost and functional benefits which derive from a computer based control or SCADA system starts with a realistic and practical identification of goals to be achieved. One should realize the utilization of varied and even sophisticated resources inherent in a computer based system; however, marginal benefits or system goals may become costly appendages obtainable only through escalation of investment in: engineering; software purchase and configuration; and hardware including computer, peripherals, real world interface devices and primary instruments. The use of computers should not equate to high cost or a higher cost than alternative approaches. While one hears and reads about elaborate SCADA systems and large proprietary hardware and software control systems costing millions of dollars, and the entry level for the application of an elementary or basic digital system can carry a price tag of only a few thousand dollars.
