With the recent US Congressional mandate to states to formalize plans to protect public water supply sources, Delaware is well ahead of many states in the US. This paper lists the programs that Delaware already has in place to collect and organize information in GIS databases on source water areas and potential sources of contamination. This will enable Delaware to focus on the more difficult tasks of modeling wellhead areas that have not been delineated to date and assessing the susceptibility of these source water areas. These existing progrms provide a solid foundation for Delaware to comply with the source water protection provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act.
