Wellhead protection programs are mandated by the 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. These programs are designed to protect wells and wellfields from contamination. The US Environmental Protection Agency has defined the minimum requirements for wellhead protection plans, and individual states are required to implement approved wellhead protection programs. This paper describes the required elements of a wellhead protection plan, presents the available alternatives for definition of a wellhead protection area, discusses the practical aspects of mapping wellhead protection areas, and includes a brief synopsis of specific state programs.
