The effect of orthophosphate on copper corrosion was studied in pipe rig experimentsaccording to the German standard DIN 50931-1. Two effects of phosphate on coppercorrosion were noticed: phosphate dosing decreased copper oxidation and resulted in lowercopper concentrations in water; and, phosphate hindered the precipitation of malachite, which prolonged the existence of copper in water and resulted in higher copper concentration. As a consequence, orthophosphate can decrease or increase the copper release, depending onthe strength of the two effects. Neither the reduction of cuprosolvency nor the formation ofcalciumphosphate are the reasons for the mechanisms of phosphate on copper corrosion. Itcan be assumed that phosphate ions sorb on copper surface affecting the corrosion processesduring stagnation. Includes 15 references, table, figures.
