This method of test is suitable for the quantitative determination of creosote in creosote petroleum oilsolutions (CPS) meeting the requirements of AWPA Standard P3. Accuracy is better than 5 percent absolute. CPS made with petroleum oils meeting the requirements of AWPA Standard P4 containing between 40 and 75 percent of creosote have also been successfully analyzed. However, the method is not suitable for the analysis of CPS containing petroleum oils of lower viscosity and boiling range, such as hydrocarbon solvents used for oil-borne preservatives.
